Criaturas tomando los muros
No es casualidad que nuestros/sus murales hablen de la naturaleza a través de colores,en un homenaje a nuestro entorno cada tanto para no olvidarnos de quienes somos y de dónde venimos.
Les compartimos el proceso de dos de los especímenes más grandes y detallados que hay sobre Cerrada del Corazón y un poco de la historia de cómo han aparecido estos murales.
Un hipopótamo con formas hipnóticas y colores contrastantes y a su lado una iguana con texturas y cromatismos. Una muestra más del trabajo en comunidad, tiempo y paciencia.
My husband and I have lived in Barrio La Santisima Trinidad
for 13 years. We noticed a growing presence of negative
grafiti. We also noticed more serious efforts at painting
were respected and left alone.
Our neighbors, Gus and Anne Bothe up the hill from us
noticed their long exterior wall was always being spray
painted with negative imagery.
Nice place to start painting in the street as it is just up
the street and friendly people!
So, it was about 8 or 9 years ago we began painting a story
written by Catherine Friend and illustrated by Kiki Suarez.
Catherine is American..a sheep farmer and writer.
Kiki is originaly fron Germany..living in San Cristobal de
las Casas, Chiapas, Mx.
I discovered her work as a result of one of the trips
Socorro Vargas liked to organize at Christmas time.
A bus load of families and individuals who leave Tepoztlan
Christmas Eve for a 5 day whirlwind adventure exploring
Canyon del Sumidero, Lagos de Monte Bello, Pyramids, etc.
We would begin our days often at 5am, drive a few hours,
explore at a relaxed pace and return to San Cristobal or
move on to Palenque and continue hiking and climbing and
taking photos. There was time to meander the streets of
San Cristobal de Las Casas. It was there I ambled into
an art shop and discovered KIKKIMUNDO.
Her work was so colorful..so happy! I tracked her down.
Looked up her website said hello!
I discovered she had a blog page.
I noticed it changed all the time.
Visually it was wonderful and the written text was
very well written in both English and Spanish.
I found a story written by Catherine Friend, the writer /
sheep farmer living in the midwest, US.
My Head is Full of Colors.
The story was illustrated by Kiki.
I loved the story and believed it should be in Spanish.
I asked a friend to translate the story and another friend
to help me put it all together and we publised a coloring
book given out freely in San Cristobal de Las Casas and
here in Tepoztlan.
We did it again,this time a full color pocket size book!
As we were doing that a young Mexcan friend
Veronica Polanca-14 yr and I spent months materializing the
whole story on the wide wall up the street.
So the mural began from a story written in English
posted on a blog page..and then a coloring book!
We discovered other coloring books where the drawings were
easily copied onto the walls around us and we could get help
from local people who had never painted or drawn before..
simply coloring the images in. These have been fun years!
We try to take care of everything we have done.
Eventually things deteroriate and are replaced with new work.
The children´s mural is no longer there.
Instead it has been replaced twice with a whale -
the inspiration was a whale from
Imaginmorphia by Kerby Rosanes, Philipines.
Herme Alvarez painted the whale first..then we decided to
increase the size of the mural and enlarge the sea.
Sara Palacios made the sea and all the creatures swimming.
I wanted to give other people a chance to experience
materializing an idea and making it happen over a long
period of time..patience, persistence.
It is a very good feeling to do that!
We will share with you the process of the two largest
and most detailed specimens on the Cerrada del Corazón.
A hippopotamus with hypnotic shapes and contrasting
colors and next to it an iguana with textures and colors.
One more example of community work, time and patience.
Mi esposo y yo hemos estado viviendo en el Barrio de la Santísima Trinidad durante 13 años. Hemos sido persistentes en nuestros intentos de pintar paredes en contra de la negatividad del grafiti. Hemos notado esfuerzos que los esfuerzos más serios en la pintura fueron respetados y dejados en paz.
Nuestros vecinos de la parte superior de la calle y Gus y Anne Bothe notaban que en el exterior de las paredes de su casa siempre grafiteaban de manera negativa, siendo este un buen lugar para comenzar ya que están cerca y son gente amigable. Por lo tanto me parece que fué hace ocho o nueve años cuando iniciamos a pintar una historia escrita por Catherine Friend e ilustrado por Kiki Suarez.
Catherine es norteamericana, una granjera y escritora.
Kiki originalmente de Alemania viviendo en San Cristóbal de las casas.
Descubrí su trabajo como resultado de uno de los viajes que le gusta organizar en navidad a la señora Socorro Vargas.
Un camión lleno de familias e individuos que salieron de Tepoztlán la noche de navidad hacia una aventura de cinco días explorando el Cañón del sumidero, lagos de Montebello, piramides, etcétera. Iniciabamos nuestros días a las cinco am, viajamos unas cuantas horas, exploramos en un lugar relajado y pacifico y regresamos a San Cristóbal o nos movíamos hacia Palenque y continuabamos y explorando y conociendo, tomando fotografías. Había tiempo de recorrer las calles de San Cristóbal de las casas. Fué ahí donde descubrí una tienda de arte llamada “Kiki Mundo”.
Su trabajo era tan colorida y tan alegre. Investigué acerca de ella en la web y la saludé.
Descubrí que tenía una blog.
Noté que cambiaba todo el tiempo.
Visualmente era maravilloso y los textos escritos frecuentemente estaba muy bien escritos tanto en ingles como en español .
Encontré una historia escrita por Catherine Friend viviendo en el Oeste de Estados Unidos “Mi cabeza está llena de colores”.
La historia fue ilustrada por Kiki.
Me encantó la historia y creí que debería de estar en español.
Le pedí a una amiga que tradujera la historia y a otra que la pusiera toda junta para publicar un libro para iluminar y repartirlo gratis en San Cristóbal de las casa y aquí en Tepoztlán.
Luego lo repetimos, esta vez fue a color y del tamaño de un libro, pero mientras lo haciamos una amiga mexicana Veronica Polanca de 14 años y yo Judy Wray pasamos meses materializando la historia en una pared blanca en la calle.
Descubrimos otros libros para colorear donde los dibujos podían copiarse fácilmente en las paredes a nuestro alrededor y encontramos personas de la localidad que nunca habían pintado o dibujado antes para realizarlo.
Estos han sido años divertidos, tratamos de cuidar todo lo que hemos hecho.
Eventualmente los murales se han deteriorado y han sido reemplazados con trabajo nuevo. El mural de los niños ya no esta ahí, en su lugar ha sido reemplazado dos veces con una ballena cuya inspiración viene de “Imaginorphia” por el ilustrador filipino Kerby Rosanes.
Herme Alvarez fue el primero en pintar la ballena, luego decidimos aumentar su tamaño en un mural más grande con mar.
Sara Palacios dibujo el mar y todas las criaturas nadando.
He querido darle a otras personas la oportunidad de experimentar materializando una idea y haciéndola realidad durante un periodo de tiempo con paciencia y persistencia.
Produce un sentimiento muy bonito hacerlo.
